The Art of Listening

Blessed to Be a Blessing

In the beginning, God made a promise to Abraham: "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing" (Genesis 12:2).

This promise wasn’t just for Abraham but extends to all of us who call Jesus our Lord and Saviour. We are blessed to be a blessing to others. One of the most powerful ways we can bless those around us is by truly listening to them.

The Importance of Listening

Listening is a fundamental part of building relationships. It allows us to understand the hopes, dreams, fears, and anxieties of those around us. Jesus modelled this beautifully in His interactions with people. In Luke 18:35-43, we read about Jesus stopping to listen to a blind beggar despite the hustle and bustle around Him. Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” and then responded with compassion and action.

Levels of Listening

There are different levels of listening, and each one can deepen our relationships:

  1. Basic Level: Sharing information.
  2. Listening to Respond: Engaging in a conversation by responding to what the other person has said.
  3. Listening to Understand: Empathising and truly connecting with the other person.
Practical Steps to Listen Better

1. Stop and Pay Attention

Dallas Willard once said, “The first act of love is always the giving of attention.” In our busy lives, it’s easy to get swept along without truly listening to those around us. We need to stop, put down our phones, and give our full attention to the person in front of us.

Action Point: Make a conscious effort to stop what you’re doing and focus entirely on the person speaking to you. This week, try to have at least one conversation where you give your undivided attention.

2. Change Your Posture

Jesus not only stopped but also brought the blind man close to Him. Our physical posture can communicate a lot. Turning towards the person, making eye contact, and leaning in can show that we are genuinely interested in what they have to say.

Action Point: Practice active listening by adjusting your posture. Turn towards the person, make eye contact, and use minimal encouragers like nodding or saying, “I see,” or “Go on.”

3. Ask Questions

Jesus often asked questions to understand the needs of those He encountered. Asking open-ended questions can help us understand the other person’s perspective better.

Action Point: Instead of making assumptions, ask open-ended questions like, “How do you feel about that?” or “Can you tell me more about that?”

4. Actively Respond

After listening, Jesus responded with compassion and action. We should aim to do the same. Whether it’s offering a prayer, providing practical help, or just being there for someone, our actions can speak volumes.

Action Point: After listening, think about how you can respond in a meaningful way. It could be as simple as offering a prayer or as involved as helping with a specific need.

Listening to Our Community

Jesus also listened to the broader cries of the community. In Luke 19:41-42, He wept over Jerusalem, understanding its pain and brokenness. We, too, need to listen to the needs of our communities. Whether it’s the financial strain, loneliness, or other underlying issues, we can be God’s hands and feet by responding with compassion.

Action Point: Take time to observe and listen to the needs of your community. Consider volunteering locally, starting a community lunch, or simply being a friendly neighbour.

Conclusion

Listening is a powerful act of love that can transform our relationships and communities. By stopping, paying attention, changing our posture, asking questions, and actively responding, we can truly bless those around us. Let’s take the time to listen to our neighbours and be the blessing God has called us to be.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to be better listeners. Open our ears to hear the needs of those around us and fill us with Your compassion. Holy Spirit, lead us and empower us to respond in love and grace. May we be a blessing to our neighbours and our community, reflecting Your love in all we do. Amen.
