Romans 2
Scripture anchor: Romans 2:1–16; 2:17–29
One-sentence theological focus: God’s judgment is impartial, and covenant badges without inward transformation cannot secure righteousness.
Position in Romans’ argument:
Romans 2 prevents self-righteous hearing. After exposing obvious pagan disorder in chapter 1, Paul turns the spotlight onto the morally confident and especially the Jew who boasts in Torah and circumcision. In Wright’s framework, this chapter deepens the argument that possession of the law does not solve the Adamic problem, and that God’s true covenant people are marked by heart-transformation, not mere external privilege.
